Why Tuscany, Italy?

Tuscany is a region that embodies the essence of Italian culture, history, and beauty. From the rolling hills of the countryside to the charming cities like Florence and Siena, Tuscany offers a unique blend of art, architecture, and culinary delights that will captivate your senses.

As an African-American student, studying abroad in Tuscany can be a particularly enriching experience. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the connections between African and Italian cultures, learn about the shared histories, and gain a deeper understanding of the global African diaspora.

  • A Celebration of Black Excellence: Tuscany has a long history of welcoming and celebrating Black artists and intellectuals. From the soulful operas of Florence to the architectural genius of Siena, Black contributions are woven into the very fabric of the Tuscan landscape.
  • A Welcoming Community: Italians are known for their warmth and hospitality. While language barriers may exist, Tuscans are generally eager to connect with visitors and share their culture.
  • A Foodie Paradise: Tuscany is a haven for food lovers! Prepare to tantalize your taste buds with fresh, seasonal ingredients, delicious regional specialties, and of course, some of the best wine in the world.
  • The Art of Living: Italians prioritize slowing down and savoring life’s simple pleasures. (A welcome change of pace from that of America. To this day, I still miss this simplistic way of life.) Studying abroad in Tuscany allows you to embrace this philosophy and develop a healthier, more balanced approach to life.
The Psychological Benefits of Studying Abroad in Tuscany

Studying abroad in Tuscany can have a profound impact on the mental well-being and personal growth of an African-American student. By immersing yourself in a new culture, you’ll challenge your comfort zone and push yourself to adapt to new situations. For me, personally, the beauty and serenity of Tuscany had an indescribable calming effect on my mind and body. The rolling hills, picturesque villages, and stunning architecture provided a sense of peace and tranquility, helping me to reduce stress and find a resemblance of balance in those moments.

I should also take the chance to mention that I did not experience any racism while I was there. That’s not to say that it doesn’t exist there (I mean, racism is everywhere in the world.) But I not only felt safe as an African-American student within the walls of The American University of Rome, but pretty much everywhere I went. I was warmly acknowledged and engaged with.
